We only have 9 letters written by St. Francis. Surprisingly, most of those letters are ones in which the saint chastises priests for not showing proper reverence because they are using dirty vessels and linens at mass. And he also chides them for not keeping the Eucharist in place that is suitable.
These are not the kind of letters most people would expect from the gentle St. Francis. However, they speak to his deep love of the mass and the Eucharist.
In another letter, St. Francis addressed public officials. He showed his care for their souls by warning them with language that again might not fit the usual image of this popular saint.
